Enkele maanden geleden werd het nieuws bekend dat Terry Pratchett, een van de bestverkopende schrijvers van Engeland en een van mijn persoonlijke favorieten, een beginnende vorm van Alzheimer heeft. Op zich nog niks aan de hand, de symptomen zijn nu nog zeer beperkt, maar het toekomstbeeld voor Pratchett is wel iets somberder. Een relativerend “uiteindelijk gaan we allemaal dood” kan daar niets aan doen.
Nu er weer volop bejaardosaurussen door het TV-beeld lopen vanwege boekenweek, “Hersenschimmen” Bernlef voorop, is het een mooi moment om nog eens te wijzen op het belang van onderzoek naar Alzheimer. Er is nu bitter weinig wat eraan gedaan kan worden. Ik zeg dit ook uit eigenbelang, het zit in de familie, dus wie weet wat een donatie nog voor goeds kan doen.
Na de diagnose heeft Terry Pratchett een donatie van een £500.000 gedaan aan de Alzheimer Research Trust. Door fans is de actie “Match it for Pratchett” opgestart, met als doel om de fans allemaal bij elkaar ook zo’n bedrag bij elkaar te laten sprokkelen. De eerste £30.000 zijn al bij elkaar. Kunnen we in Nederland dat initiatief niet overnemen? Helaas schiet me geen leuk klinkende domeinnaam te binnen, maar doneren kan je ook gewoon hier.

Dit jaar zou de verfilming van het boek The Colour of Magic en The Light Fantastic uit moeten komen. Twee boeken in één, mucked about with by Terry Pratchett, die nu het verhaal kon aanpassen zoals hij het met 25 jaar ervaring als schrijver zou hebben geschreven. Na Hogfather de tweede verfilming.

(0)Dit jaar lijkt het eindelijk te gaan gebeuren: een Discworld film. Het boek Hogfather wordt verfilmd door de Engelse TV zender Sky One die het (uiteraard) met Kerst zal uitzenden. Terry Pratchett zelf speelt een kleine bijrol als speelgoedmaker, zoals ook te zien in de promotiefoto’s van de Discworld Calendar. Een andere bekende naam in de cast is die van Tony Robinson (Baldrick uit Blackadder).
Eerder zijn er plannen geweest om Mort en Good Omens te verfilmen. Mort liep vast omdat men het een geweldig verhaal vond, maar Death moest eruit… Voor de niet-lezers: het centrale karakter is Death, oftewel de Dood. Op de gebruikelijke humoristische wijze, maar daar was Amerika nog niet aan toe. Good Omens is nog steeds in de voorbereidingsfase, niet vreemd aangezien de regisseur Terry Gilliam is. Die wil nog wel eens over budget gaan en dat schiet niet op als je sponsoren zoekt. De aanhoudende problemen rond Discworld films leverden het volgende citaat van Pratchett op (Neil is Neil Gaiman, co-auteur van Good Omens):
The difference between me and Neil in our attitude to movie projects is
that he doesn’t believe they’re going to happen until he’s sitting in
his seat eating popcorn, and I don’t believe they’re going to happen.
Ondertussen zijn er tekenfilms gemaakt van Wyrd Sisters en Soul Music, en was Johnny and the Bomb afgelopen jaar als 3-delige serie op de BBC. En nu dus Hogfather. Ik ben heel benieuwd, kan haast niet wachten.

De eerste aflevering is al geweest, maar ik geef ‘m toch nog even: de tv-serie van Pratchett’s Johnny and the Bomb. Aangezien leerlingen bij vlagen ook mijn weblog lezen: erg leuk en goed voor je Engels (desnoods teletekst 888 erbij, zo heb ik het ook geleerd).
Johnny en zijn vrienden (een groep kinderen van een jaar of 14, 15) vindt de zwerfster Mrs. Tachyon gewond op straat naast haar winkelwagentje. Met dat wagentje blijken ze in de tijd te kunnen reizen, en komen ze in hun woonplaats tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Door een ongeluk blijven 2 vrienden daar achter. De rest moet terug om de geschiedenis te herstellen, anders worden ze niet geboren. Dat klinke allemaal wat droog, maar gecombineerd met de typische Terry Pratchett humor is het een geweldig verhaal.

At the start of our story, Johnny just happens to be on hand when time-travelling Mrs Tachyon is blown quite literally from 1941 to 2005, landing in a heap almost at Johnny’s feet.
While poor Mrs T is in hospital, Johnny inherits her shopping trolley and its unusual cargo – the Bags of Time. Everything revolves around the 21 May 1941, when the small Pennine town of Blackbury suffered its only air raid of the Second World War.
Along with Mrs Tachyon, Johnny’s Gran and Grandad were there – of course they were only teenagers at the time – but they fell in love when Grandad, Tom Maxwell, made his epic bike ride to raise the alarm and saved the residents of Paradise Street (including his future bride, the pretty young Rose Bushell) from the horrors of the Blitz.
Tom and Rose survived to get married and the rest is history – at least it was until young Johnny started messing with the Bags of Time.
He and his friends slip back to the Second World War and with the best of intentions start ‘bumping into things’. And this is where Terry Pratchett asks the big question – if you could go back in time, would your actions make any difference, or is history already written?
In the world of Pratchett everything makes a difference… maybe not a big difference, but a difference.
Like when Bigmac takes the bike on which Tom’s epic ride is due to take place. Suddenly Paradise Street is in peril, the bombers are on their way and the lovely Rose may well be doomed.
And as if our heroes hadn’t got enough on their plates, the unique world of Pratchett lets them slip sideways as well as forward and back. So they also find themselves in an alternative present where the changes they’ve made for better or worse just get to play themselves out.
Confused? You will be, a bit – but there’s a lot of fun to be had in confusion, particularly when Terry Pratchett’s there to lead you to the other side.
What starts as an accident turns into a breathless adventure and ends up in a race against time, with Johnny and his friends trying desperately to reverse the ‘butterfly effect’ that could stop important little bits of the present ever happening – like Tom and Rose making it and Johnny Maxwell ever being born.

Na al het gefeest dit weekend vandaag inkopen gedaan van het gescoorde geld en de boekenbon.
Eerste aankoop was Science of Discworld 3: Darwin’s Watch. Meest recente boek van Terry Pratchett, waarin hij met wetenschappers Jack Cohen en Ian Stewart op een toegankelijke manier ingaat op de wetenschap. De vorige boeken stonden in het teken van het ontstaan van de aarde en de cultuur van de mens als pan narrans, de vertellende aap.
Daarnaast heb ik een philishave gekocht omdat ik die gloeiend dure Gilette mesjes zat werd. Zal wel even wennen zijn, ik scheer me normaal gesproken onder de douche en dat kan met deze dus niet.
